Common Beginner Mistakes When Exchanging Crypto

Common Beginner Mistakes When Exchanging Crypto

The crypto market constantly attracts new participants. And the same mistakes are made again and again, costing people money, nerves and time. Most of them are easy to avoid if you know what to look out for.

Mistake 1: choosing an exchanger by the best rate without checking its reputation

Wanting to save on the rate is understandable. But a difference of fractions of a percent is not worth the risk of losing the whole amount. Fraudulent sites often offer a rate better than the market to lure victims.

Before exchanging: check how long the platform has been operating, read reviews on independent resources and make sure the exchanger has a support team that actually replies.

Mistake 2: following links from messengers and social networks

Phishing sites — exact copies of well-known exchangers or exchanges — are spread through messengers, social networks and email. The address may differ by one letter or by the domain zone. After you enter your data or send funds, the money goes to scammers.

The rule: open an exchanger only from a browser bookmark or by typing the address yourself. Never via a link from a chat.

Mistake 3: an error in the recipient’s wallet address

Cryptocurrency transactions are irreversible. If you have sent coins to the wrong address, getting them back is practically impossible. Even one wrong character makes it a different address.

A good habit: always copy the address in full rather than typing it manually. After pasting, compare the first and last characters with the original. Some malware replaces the address in the clipboard — be careful.

Mistake 4: sending funds before the rate is fixed

The cryptocurrency rate changes every minute. Some exchangers fix the rate when the request is created, others when the funds are received. If you do not clarify this in advance, the final amount may come as a surprise.

Ask the exchanger: is the rate fixed, and for how long? With long transactions (especially on the Bitcoin blockchain) this is critical.

Mistake 5: using the wrong network

USDT exists on several networks: TRC-20, ERC-20, BEP-20 and others. If the exchanger expects coins on TRC-20 and you send them on ERC-20, the funds will get stuck or be lost.

Before sending: always check the specified network against the network you are sending on. It is a simple step that saves you from serious losses.

Mistake 6: ignoring KYC and AML

Some beginners choose exchangers without verification for convenience or anonymity. But the absence of KYC on a platform is not only a convenience — it is also a sign that it is not legitimate. Licensed services are required to identify their clients.

Besides, if you receive coins with a high AML risk score, you may run into problems when you try to exchange them later on another platform.

Mistake 7: not documenting your operations

Beginners often do not keep transaction confirmations, screenshots of rates or correspondence with support. In any disputed case — a delay, a wrong amount, a tax inquiry — documents become your only argument.

Make it a habit: after every operation, take a screenshot and save it in a separate folder.
