What Is a Spread and How It Affects Your Crypto Exchange

Spread Explained in 30 Seconds
A bank buys dollars from you at 89 rubles and sells them at 91 rubles. That 2-ruble difference is the spread — not a "commission," just two different prices. Crypto exchanges work the same way.
Why Spread Matters at Different Amounts
The spread scales proportionally with amount:
- 0.5% spread on $1,000 = $5
- 0.5% spread on $10,000 = $50
- 0.5% spread on $50,000 = $250
- 0.5% spread on $100,000 = $500
A 2% spread on $50,000 = $1,000 per transaction. This is why comparing rates before large exchanges is worth 5 minutes of your time.
How to Calculate an Exchange's Real Spread
Find the market rate on CoinGecko, note the exchange's rate, subtract, divide by market rate, multiply by 100%. Example: market BTC = $65,000, exchange rate = $63,700. Spread = (1,300 / 65,000) × 100% = 2%.
Spread Benchmarks
- Under 0.3% — excellent (major exchanges)
- 0.3–1% — good for specialized exchanges
- 1–2% — acceptable for small amounts or rare pairs
- Over 2% — look for alternatives
How to Minimize Spread Losses
Compare the final amount across several services before every exchange. Request individual rates for amounts over $5,000. Use popular pairs like BTC/USDT or ETH/USDT. Use stablecoins as intermediaries. Exchange during business hours when markets are more liquid.
